Managing Director Gayle Souter-Brown is recognized for expertise in planning and design for health and well-being, with over 25 years’ experience in international landscape and urban design. Using landscape as a cost effective intervention, she began her career with the Department of Conservation, New Zealand, specialising in evidence based environmental design, stakeholder engagement, sustainable design for health, education, housing, play and care environments. In 2006 she founded Greenstone Design UK Ltd, a global salutogenic design consultancy. She has been invited to address numerous national and international conferences around the theme of using landscape to address issues affecting health and well-being. Gayle is author of the forthcoming title Landscape and Urban Design for Health and Well-Being, using healing, sensory and therapeutic gardens, to be published by Routledge Press, London, in 2014.
Gayle has been commissioned to design and advise on a wide variety of projects in Russia, NZ, Malaysia, France, Portugal, India, Ghana, USA and UK. Projects include peer reviews of new hospital projects, new urban parks, affordable housing; development of an urban forest as part of a regeneration project post natural disaster in Christchurch NZ; designing out prostitution as part of an urban regeneration project; a large-scale eco resort in Borneo; Europe’s first disabled children’s hotel in Portugal; natural play spaces; hospital therapeutic and rehabilitation gardens; historic garden development for Museum of Farnham; monastic gardens; ecological restoration projects in conjunction with the University of Greenwich ; Islamic gardens; dementia gardens for care homes; sensory gardens for special needs schools; outdoor classroom environments.
