International school grounds
This is a current and on-going project. The photos below show Phase One, with the first of the new planting, 2 earth mounds, tunnel, amphitheater seating, climbing tower, story telling area, roofed sandpit, boulder climb, outdoor stage, climbing logs (Petruska dolls) and a large ship. The initial project brief for the US's most prestigious international school called for a natural playground that would work when under snow for 5 months, as well as during the short hot weeks of spring - summer. The old rubber safety surface absorbed heat and made the playground unbearably hot from May-June. Kerbing for the fire access road meant the children subconsciously were stopped from using the additional space towards the fence. The elementary school children needed more space to play, prompts to create their own games, spaces to explore and areas for small group or inquiry-based outdoor teaching and learning, for small and whole class groups.
