Why Greenstone
Client Feedback
"I found it quite hard to put into words how great [the new sensory play garden] looks because I think, for once, I was speechless!" Julie Rowden, Kent County Council
"From a programmatic standpoint, it needed to be a beautiful space that relieves tension and provides the restorative properties of nature. We also wanted a place that would work well for staff, uplifting them and enhancing their programme. Greenstone Design exceeded our expectations.” Julie, OT, National Spinal Injuries Centre
Sensory Gardens

Sensory gardens can be large or small
Sensory gardens are sometimes known as peace gardens or healing gardens. They are certainly peaceful. They offer a haven for adults and children alike. Since medieval times sensory gardens have provided safe places of reflection and activity that feed mind, body and soul.
Children and adults with learning disabilities particularly benefit from time in well-designed sensory gardens. In addition, stressed young parents, children with ADHD and ASD, isolated older members of the community, stressed executives and teenagers suffering general angst report improved mood, reduced anxiety, improved memory and enhanced cognitive function after time spent in sensory gardens.
Sensory gardens are special healing places, designed to soothe or stimulate targeted parts of the brain. The condition determines the style of sensory garden needed. Our sensory gardens are used as part of transformative care programmes in care home gardens, disabled children's residential gardens, in special schools and in private residences.
Sensory gardens are increasingly used across the UK and Europe. Their popularity has seen some people "jump on the bandwagon" without the necessary training or experience, with resulting poor attempts at creating sensory rich spaces. Salutogenic design detail, accessibility and inclusion are at the heart of our sensory garden design for the disabled. Making the rich experiences of the natural world available to sight impaired, hearing impaired, learning disabled or mobility impaired people is important to us.
"When developing a design brief for a residential garden, Special School or wellness garden, it is important that the sensory gardens are a useful space that is an extension of what can be done within the home or facility and offer people places to go outside that are safe and engaging.”
As leading healthy landscapes providers, the specialist sensory garden designers at Greenstone Design UK work with a team of professionals. Our expertise ensures health and well-being outcomes so that educational, social, aspirational, and health programme targets are met. or exceeded.
